Could Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin Actually Be The Greatest Mayor Of All Time?

As the nation pauses to acknowledge one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent US history, former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is once again in the mist of heated debates. Many people have criticized Mayor Ray Nagin Because of the lack of government response after Hurricane Katrina, but was he the unfortunate Fall Guy?

New Orleans is now 70% back to full strength in only 5 years as compared to the surrounding parishes. Since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina The City New Orleans has hosted the annual Essence Music Festival, retained their NBA Franchise, fortified their NFL Franchise, hosted the 2010 Super Bowl Parade, continued the annual Jazz Festivals, continued the Bayou Classic, continued the famous Mardi Gras Celebration, and was awarded a Super Bowl in 2013 all during the Nagin Administration.

New Orleans has made tremendous progress over the past 5 years despite being once considered uninhabitable. The media seems determined to bury Ray Nagin under the remaining piles of Katrina debris in the attempt to discredit his leadership but the facts of the recovery are both obvious and bold.

  • New Orleans Population has continued to increase since the mandatory evacuation of the entire city ordered by Mayor Ray Nagin and enforced by the National Guard.

  • New Orleans Central Business District is now operating at a pace that parallels pre Katrina numbers.

  • Even the hardest hit areas of New Orleans (N.O East & Lower 9th Ward) are now experiencing a resurgence of residents, businesses, and schools far ahead of the 10 year prediction.

Tyronne Jacques of Reputation Radio says they will tackle the topic on his talk show this Monday (Aug 30th 2010) at 7pm CST. Tyronne Jacques says that the City of New Orleans is torn up the middle regarding the legacy of Mr. Ray Nagin, and just the mention of his name will turn into a 4 hour debate.

"When people call him the worst mayor in history I have to ask them, as compared to whom? What other city in the nation experienced a total evacuation? For nearly 90 days New Orleans was totally locked down, the only thing that compared to this historical evacuation was the Chernobyl Disaster. When you compare Ground Zero in New York to the recovery of New Orleans whether you like it or not you have to credit the Nagin Administration for the current success of the city."

Many factors were aligned to prevent aid from reaching the citizens that found themselves stranded at the New Orleans Convention Center, but the main obstacle was Donald Henry Rumsfeld. The Bush Administration has managed to escape the brunt of the blame for the Katrina Disaster by pointing the finger at Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin, but the fact remains that President Bush had the power to alleviate the situation on September 1, 2005.

Tyronne Jacques (a lifelong resident of New Orleans and a Katrina Survivor) went on to say that it wasn't until Mayor Ray Nagin publicly embarrassed President Bush on WWL Radio that aid finally made it to the citizens trapped at the convention center.

Regardless of what side of the debate you're on here is the one thing that is for certain; the City of New Orleans experienced Hell, High Water, and the Saints Marching In the Super Bowl all on Mayor's Ray Nagin watch. What other mayor can make that claim?
