ADVERTISEMENT Images of seas of black faces begging for help that took days to arrive, and stories of sheriffs from adjacent white suburbs turning desperate evacuees away at gunpoint as they tried to flee New Orleans, horrified the nation. But for many who grew up in a city that had hosted the slave trade and clung to segregation, the initial shock was transformed into fury that their deepest fears and suspicions were true: the government does not care about black people. "The racism is so raw here," said Barbara Major, a community activist who co-chaired Mayor Ray Nagin's Bring New Orleans Back commission. "People were outraged that people were dying. People been dying," she said. "They should have been outraged that children didn't get a decent education. That there wasn't decent housing here (just) like in every other city in the United States." More than 140 years after the abolition of slavery, and more than 40 years since the passage of the civil rights act, New Orleans remained a highly segregated city. Blacks held significant political power, but economic power remained the domain of whites. Poverty was widespread, as those educated in crumbling public schools were stuck in the low-wage service sectors that supported the city's massive tourist industry. Drugs, gangs and violence were rampant.

I am 57, just found out I was adopted, and am searching for birth parents for medical info, heritage, and to meet if you so desire. I saw my exact duplicate in that photo! I was raised by two people who wanted me more than anything in the world, and I never doubted that I was loved. They sacrificed to give me everything. I am not angry and do not feel abandoned, as I know it was the circumstances, and I was just "a baby" to you, and it wasn't against me personally. I want you to know it's okay. I couldn't have had better parents. Thank you for giving me to them. However, I feel that something is missing. People who are not adopted will never understand the feeling we have when we find out our past is a blank page. Please let me meet you, or siblings, if there are any. I've longed for a sister my entire life, and if that was a twin or sister in that photo, I'd love to meet you. I don't want anything from you except to meet, if you want to meet me, too. ??? I know absolutely nothing, except that I looked just like the girl in the newspaper, exact face, exact hairdo, the pose I always have when having my picture taken when I'm playing around, and my daughter looks like her, too. Who am I what did I write?
?I was born in 1897 where I came from an old southern family, growing up in Oxford, Mississippi I joined the Canadian, and later the British, Royal Air Force during the First World War; I studied for a while at the University of Mississippi, and temporarily worked for a New York bookstore and a New Orleans newspaper. Except for some trips to Europe and Asia, and a few brief stays in Hollywood as a scriptwriter, I worked on my novels and short stories on a farm in Oxford. Many say I share great similarities to that of Sam Clemens. I would die of a heart attack in 1962; who am I and what have I written??
