I want to know how equivalent storms can wreak so much human destruction in one place, yet not another. Well, I know that China was a heck of a lot more organized in evacuating some 1.5 million people, where our government couldn't be bothered with evacuating half a million people effectively. So, politics aside, did the government (yes, the government is responsible for protecting the citizens) bungle Katrina?

I was watching a program about the problems related to evacuating the New Orleans population before Katrina hit. It showed that Jehvah's Witnesses, instead of relying of the city or state, brought together a fleet of trucks, painted JW on the side, and spread out in the city to make sure every member was taken to Texas before the storm hit. They could only take the necessities. They didn't say if any other religion did the same, but if the JWs did, you would think all of them would have done it. This came to mind as I attended a recent civic meeting for cab drivers on how to be prepared for a disaster and what those of us without family responsibilities can be doing to help.
