GoNOLA Recommends: 5 Things to do in New Orleans this Weekend

While the Carnival Season started a while back on Twelfth Night, Mardi Gras is really starting to get into gear this weekend in the French Quarter. Many locals treat Saturday night's Krewe du Vieux as kind of a primer for the string of parades, flying beads, and general revelry in the streets that will follow for the next two weeks. So gear up, get out to the Quarter, wear comfortable shoes, and catch some mind blowing music on the way.

Paul Sanchez - The former Cowboy Mouthguitarist has set up shop at Canal Street music joint Chickie Wah Wah. Sanchez will start churning out his unique blend of soulful songwriting at 8 pm, making this a perfect stop on your way home from work.

Krewe du Vieux - This loosely organized, satirical, anything goes, immensely enjoyable parade will walk/march/stumble/fall/roll through the French Quarter Saturday night. Celebrating "25 Years Wasted" with king Don Marshall, expect a raucous good time.

101 Runners - This Mardi Gras Indian/New Orleans funk conglomerate will take the stage at One Eyed Jack's with Big Chief Monk Boudreaux around 9 pm. Expect a wild show that will rival the barely contained insanity of the Krewe de Vieux rolling by outside.

Leon Russell

Leon Russell - For a slightly mellower sonic experience, the " Master of Space and Time " himself Leon Russell lands at the House of Blues to support his hugely successful comeback collaboration with Elton John. Russell will take you back to the 60s, float you through the 70s, and blow your mind all the way to yesterday.

Sunday Night Brass with Mainline - Mainline, one of the newest brass band sensations to crop up out of the fertile New Orleans musical landscape, take to the stage at Blue Nile on Frenchmen Street at 10 pm. End your wild weekend on a high note and a booming bass drum.
